Nature and outdoor activities around the city

The area around Villa de Leyva is ideal for outdoor adventure enthusiasts.

Parque Arqueológico de Monquirá: Remains of the Muisca people, also known as El Infiernito or “Little Hell” in French, is one of the few remaining vestiges of Muisca civilization. It owes its name to the Spanish conquistadors who discovered it in the 16th century. The archaeological site consists of some thirty monoliths measuring up to 5 metres in height. According to a study by archaeologists, El Infiernito was a sacred site that was probably used to observe the stars, offering an insight into indigenous astronomy. The alignment of the dolmens or monoliths is thought to have formed an astral calendar that predicted the seasons, equinoxes and solstices, all important elements in working the land.
