One of the first places to discover Bogotá’s heritage is Candelaria, the city’s historic district, which includes Plaza Bolivar, the political and historic heart of the city, the Gold Museum, the pre-Columbian treasure trove, Chorro de Quevedo, a small square where the metropolis was founded, Casa del Florero, the origins of independence, the Botero Museum, one of Colombia’s most famous artists, La Spetima, Bogotá’s most famous main thoroughfare and a popular tourist destination. In the Candelaria area (the pedestrian zone), you’ll find a multitude of shops, street shows and street vendors of all kinds… The atmosphere is intense, and it’s the meeting place of the Bogotanese. No historical tour would be complete without a visit to the Museo del Oro, the Gold Museum. Reopened in 2009 with a striking new scenography, this unique museum welcomes 500,000 visitors a year. Admire thousands of gold objects finely worked by pre-Columbian civilizations and discover the importance of this precious metal in their rituals and beliefs, the reason why the Spanish conquistadors wanted to seize Colombian gold, giving birth to the famous myth of “El Dorado” in 1536.

Historical monuments and sites
